A group of people stands near a sign that reads "Capricornia Cays National Park, Lady Musgrave Island" on a sunny day. They are gathered on a coral beach with lush green foliage and the turquoise ocean in the background. Some are looking at maps or talking about Bundaberg Day Tours and other Things To Do in Bundaberg.

Who Are The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) is the governing body responsible for the management and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system. Established in 1975, the GBRMPA is a Commonwealth agency, with responsibility for managing the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and other Commonwealth marine reserves.

The GBRMPA is responsible for the protection and management of the Great Barrier Reef, a series of 2,900 individual coral reefs, 600 continental islands and 300 coral cays that stretches for 2,300 kilometres along the north-east coast of Australia. It is the largest marine protected area in the world, covering an area of 348,000 square kilometres.

The GBRMPA’s primary objective is to ensure the ongoing health of the Great Barrier Reef and its associated ecosystems, by managing and conserving the ecosystem’s natural values. This includes protecting endangered species, controlling fishing and other activities, and limiting the impact of human activities on the reef.

The GBRMPA works with a range of stakeholders, including the Australian and Queensland governments, traditional owners, scientists, industry and the community, to ensure the protection and conservation of the Great Barrier Reef.

The GBRMPA works in partnership with other agencies, such as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Tourism Association, to ensure the sustainable use of the Great Barrier Reef and its associated resources by all stakeholders.

The GBRMPA is responsible for the implementation of a range of management strategies, including regulations, zoning plans, and scientific research projects. It also works to educate the public about the Great Barrier Reef and its associated marine environment, and to encourage the public to participate in conservation efforts.

The GBRMPA also has an education and training program, which provides information and resources to the public and industry about the Great Barrier Reef, its associated marine environment, and how to help protect the reef.

The GBRMPA works closely with other organisations, such as the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Tourism Association, to promote the tourism industry in the area, as well as to encourage the public to participate in educational and conservation activities.
